What is an International Dark Sky Park?

DarkSky International initiated the Dark Sky Places Program in 2001 to recognize outstanding efforts in preserving and protecting dark natural night skies free from light pollution. The Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park was the first location in Japan to be certified as an International Dark Sky Park. In fact, measurements conducted by experts revealed that the darkness of the night sky in this area exceeded the standard (20.00 mag/arcsec2 or more), with measurements ranging from 21.62 to 21.99 mag/arcsec2, making the starry sky of the Yaeyama Islands one of the best in the world. To preserve this exceptional starry sky environment, it has been certified as an International Dark Sky Park.
